He was married to Mary Spear Barton in 1858. They had three children: Oliver Marion, John Forest and William Grant Greenbank.
He was a Civil War Veteran 1861-1865 and served in Company D, 61st Ohio Infantry.
William Greenbank was killed when a tree fell on him. He went out in the timber to cut trees. His wife, Mary, was listening for the echo of the ax for it was the habit for him to drop the ax into the stump after the tree fell. The tree had fallen but there was no echo of the ax. They found his body under the tree. He was killed a few months before his youngest son, William Grant, was born.
