SARAH M. WILSEY was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, November 25, 1845, and departed this life at her home in Little River, Kansas, April 4, (Easter Sunday), 1926; aged 80 years, 4 months and 9 days.
She was united in marriage to James W. Crawford at Rapid City, Illinois, November 7, 1866. To this union were born two sons and three daughters – Phebe E. Crawford, who died January 22, 1889, Daniel H. Crawford and Mrs. Hester Greenbank residing at Little River; Etta M. Crawford, who died in infancy, and James W. Crawford, Jr., who died July 23, 1921.
With her husband and family she moved from Illinois to Topeka, Kansas, in October, 1870, and in October, 1871, they came to Rice county, settling on a claim in Union township, southwest of what is now the city of Little River. Here she endured the hardships incident to pioneer life – the same as did other early settlers. In 1881 the family moved to the town of Little River, her husband having at that time received the appointment as Little River's first postmaster.
Mother Crawford was one of the earliest residents of Little River and survived all others who resided in the town prior to 1883, or possibly 1884. Her husband preceded her to the better world October 25, 1912.
Mother Crawford was a good mother, a true Christian woman. Her mission was one of love and service. Her happiest moments, hours and days were when she was toiling, planning and sacrificing to make others happy. As a member of the Methodist Church and Sunday School she was faithful in attendance and service so long as she was a physically able. She was a member of Liberty Rebekah Lodge No. 174, I. O. O. F.
Mother Crawford is survived by one son, one daughter, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister – Mrs. Rose Carpenter of London, Ark.; also other relatives, and innumerable friends who attest to her goodness in times of need and sorrow.
Funeral service was conducted from the Methodist church by her pastor, the Rev. Ira N. Pierce, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in Bean cemetery.
