Motion Picture Director, Film Producer, Television Producer, Actor. He was responsible for creating iconic television situation comedy series such as "Happy Days," "Laverne & Shirley," "The Odd Couple," and "Mork & Mindy." Born Garry Kent Masciarelli, he graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and served in the U.S. Army as a writer for Stars and Stripes and Seoul News and as production chief for Armed Forces Radio Network in Korea. He began his career as a comedy writer for comedians including Joey Bishop, then worked on the writing staff of "The Tonight Show With Jack Paar." In 1970, he created a television adaptation of Neil Simon's play "The Odd Couple" for ABC. The successful sitcom drew several Emmy nominations over the course of its five seasons. Television hits followed soon after. "Happy Days" became the number-one-rated television show in 1974. After "Happy Days," Marshall created spin-off shows "Laverne & Shirley," starring his sister Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, and "Mork & Mindy," which began actor and comedian Robin Williams' career. He would go on to direct several blockbuster films, including: "Nothing in Common" (1986), "Overboard" (1987), "Beaches" (1988), "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Frankie and Johnny" (1991), "Runaway Bride" (1999), "The Princess Diaries" (2001), "Raising Helen" (2004), "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004), "Valentine's Day" (2009), "New Year's Eve" (2011) and "Mother's Day" (2016). In addition to directing-producing, he acted in the films: "Lost in America" (1985), "Soapdish" (1991), "Hocus Pocus" (1993), "A League of Their Own" (1992), "Never Been Kissed" (1999), "Orange County" (2002), "Chicken Little" (2005) and "Race to Witch Mountain" (2009). Garry Marshall died from complications of pneumonia following a stroke. In 2017, he was posthumously awarded the Disney Legends award.
