Xenophon William Mitchell, 88, born, February 13, 1918, Chicago, IL to William and Vivi Mitchell. Passed away, August 29, 2006, Ottawa, IL at home.
Xenny attended and graduated from Gray School and Forman Jr. High in Chicago, IL, attended Schurz High School, Chicago, attended Vedova Preparatory School (Branch of Oxford), Athens, Greece, attended and graduated from Athens College and attended the University of Athens, Athens, Greece.
He served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific as a PFC, 11th Battalion, 2nd Division from January of 1942 until January 1944.
He married Poppy Paleologos on June 24, 1945 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Chicago, IL. They have one daughter, Daphne Mitchell (John Cunningham), and one Grandson, Alexander Mitchell Konetzki.
Xenny was associated with Cable TV for 42 years and was inducted into the NCTA (National Cable Television Association) Cable Pioneers in June of 1984, after 20 years in the Cable industry at that time. He mentored others who became members and launched and developed numerous cable systems, in Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Florida, Virginia, Hawaii, and started the first cable company in Greece in the mid to late nineties. He began the first cable company in Ottawa in 1962 for Alliance Corporation, later bought by Jerrold Electronics. This is after his early career in the movie theater business in Chicago and Ottawa. He had a successful marketing career for the Roxy and Orpheum Theaters in Ottawa and the Mars in Marseilles, involving local merchants in campaigns and providing free "shows" for children on Saturday mornings at the Roxy with the help of Harry Cook of Dayton Dairy, Fred Gerding of the First National Bank of Ottawa and other Ottawa businessmen and women.
He was a pioneer in local origination programming winning a first place award from the NCTA in 1969 for public relations for his 69 hour telethon in Ottawa for the United Fund. Over 1300 local performers and guests appeared on the 69 hour telethon giving many young people, children and business people a chance to send their message or talent to friends and families. He also introduced programs such as your Senator Reports, Your Congressman Reports, Your Mayor Reports and the Mayor's Hotline, amongst others and was well known for broadcasting election returns from the Ottawa TV Cable Antenna site.
He commuted to New York in his work for Teleprompter Corporation until 1973 when he returned to Illinois and started his own TV Cable consulting business.
He was member of the Ottawa JC's in the 1950's, a member of the VFW, Ottawa Elks Club, NCTA Pioneers, All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Joliet, Parish Council, and a founding member of the Chicago Academy Chapter of the order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association).
He was an avid reader, loved travel, music, classic movies, gardening, his family, his church, and helping others. He was involved in numerous political campaigns in advertising from local to state to national candidates.
He is sadly missed by his beloved wife, daughter, grandson, son-in-law and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, his maternal Grandparents, Koula and Andrew Antonopoulos, and his paternal Grandparents, Pareskevas and Panagiatoula Michalopoulos.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the Ottawa Funeral Home, Ottawa, IL, with prayer service at 7:00 P.M. with Father Stefanos Bithos.
Funeral Services will be at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Joliet, IL at 9:00 A.M. Friday, September 01, 2006 and internment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL.
