Father of Georgia.
He was also a beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
This is my tribute to my photography mentor and Brother Ahepan:
He was a steward of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, Illinois for over 60 years. He served for 50 years on the Parish's Board of Trustees, many years as Assistant Treasurer and as Treasurer. He was elected to the 2009-2010 Board of Trustees as the time of his passing.
He was Official Photographer of all the Parish's events, including the Food Festivals and Greek School Christmas Pageants.
Military Record:
U.S. Army Medic. His rank was Sergeant.
He served from November 1941 to February 1946.
He was in Pacific Theater of Operations in India, Burma, and China.
Medals:
Overseas Campaign Service Medal
Asia-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars
Good Conduct Ribbon
WWII Victory Medal
Charter and Life Member--63 Years--of American Legion Evzones Post #1039.
He was Official Photographer of all Evzones Post events and Activities.
Order of AHEPA:
He was initiated into the Garfield Chapter #203 of the Order of AHEPA on February 24, 1983. He was a 26-Year member, appointed Official Photographer of the chapter within his first year of membership. He would go on to serve as Chapter Treasurer, and Vice President in 1995. In 2003, he was elected to the Chapter Board of Governors, in which he would serve until his passing.
He was the Garfield #203 Chapter's Delegate to many District and National AHEPA Conventions over the years.
He was the Official Photographer of the AHEPA District #13 (Illinois and Wisconsin) until his passing. He photographed all events, providing copies of pictures to everyone and making a photo album, always free of charge.
He had a high priority for the AHEPA Scholarships Awards and AHEPA Athletics Awards for High School and College students.
A high point for Brother Gus was seeing his daughter Georgia elected to Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope, the organization's highest elected office.
He was one of the finest Brothers of the Order of AHEPA, on both the Chapter and District level.
The services were at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on Monday, March 9, 2009. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.
On a personal note, Brother Gus was my mentor in photography. He taught me everything about photography and my love of taking pictures. I will always remember my mentor, my AHEPA Brother, my friend.
