Daughter of Civil War hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and his wife Fanny (nee Adams), Grace was the eldest of four children born to the Chamberlains in their home near Bowdoin College, but only she and a brother known as "Wyllys" survived infancy. Called "Daise" by her adoring father, she was exceptionally close to him, and the two shared a life-long bond of sympathy and understanding. In April 1881 she married Horace Gwynne Allen, and in time the couple became the parents of three daughters: Eleanor, Beatrice, and Rosamond. "Daise", who in 1914 rushed from her Boston home to share her widowed father's last moments, suffered the loss of her husband five years later. She was also predeceased by her younger brother, Harold Wyllys Chamberlain, a decade before her death. She died just three days prior her 81st birthday, and was interred here in Pine Grove Cemetery with her parents and siblings; her husband, Horace, who'd died 18 years earlier, is interred in Massachusetts.
