Rat came to live with us as a rescue animal you might say.
One day my son, Tonka, came home from school and was telling me that his science teacher had a boa constrictor in the classroom (which I already knew about) and the rats he kept to feed it had multiplied so fast that the teacher had rats coming out his ears so... he told the kids that any of them that wanted a pet rat could pick one out and take it home.
Well Tonka wanted one. He told me how there was this one rat, seems he'd already named it, RAT, was already tame and would let him hold it and snuggle it. He asked if he could PLEASE have Rat.
I asked him if he was willing to keep it fed, watered and the cage clean. He promised he would. I asked when he was going to get Rat. He reached into his backpack and tadaaa, there was Rat.
My son knew me too well. I've always been an animal lover and he knew I'd let him have it and he was afraid someone else would get Rat before he could get him the next day.
We took a big empty aquarium we and made him an awesome home. With mesh wire we built a tri-level cage that fit on top of the aquarium. We put ramps from one level to the next and alternated the openings from one end of the cage to the other.
He was so much fun to watch him run the ramps for treats.
We even made him a large exercise wheel and he'd get it going really fast then jump off and just sit and watch it spin. Never understood what that was about.
Tonka would make a 'kissing' noise and Rat learned to run the ramps to the top of the cage for his treats. And he ate anything and everything that my son did. There favorite was mac n cheese.
Since Rat was a boy it didn't take him long to need a bath. And I was shocked that he loved it. I was usually the one to give him his bath. The whole time he was getting washed he made a chortling noise. Then I'd towel dry him and put him on my shoulder. At the time my hair was long and he'd get underneath my hair where it was warm and groom himself.
He came to be as much my pet as my sons.
Rat was well loved...
