Sam Bennett passed away on Thursday, Flag Day, June 14, 2012, in The Woodlands, Texas, of a sudden onset of acute myeloid leukemia. He was surrounded by family, love, song and has left our hearts heavy.
Sam was born on March 21, 1939, in Hugo to A.C. and Clara Bennett. He graduated from Sallisaw High School in 1957, and attended Northeastern State University, Okmulgee Vo-Tech, and many other institutes of higher learning in support of his craft.
Sam began his career as a senior electrical design draftsman at Cities Service in Bartlesville and worked for many engineering firms in Tulsa, Alaska, Nebraska, California and Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves while still in high school, retiring at the rank of Lt. Colonel after 36 years of service. He serves as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 970, a volunteer Girl Scout Dad, a Sunday School teacher, and was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Benjamin; and mother-in-law, Susie Fleetwood.
He is survived by wife, Sue Helen; daughter, Gale Clark and husband, Steven; son, Rex Edward Bennett and wife, Stephanie; grandchildren, Crystal Keller and Aiden Edward Bennett; great-grandchildren, Kira, Samuel and Rachel; brother, Tom and wife, Jan; brother-in-law, Jay W. Fleetwood and wife, Debbie; and many nieces and nephews and an amazing number of other loved ones and friends.
Graveside services will be held at noon, Saturday, June 30, at Fleetwood Cemetery, east of Sallisaw.
