Patrick (Pat) Neeson was a veteran of World War 1, having fought with his two brothers Charles and John. Charles would be killed in action on October 11 1918 one month before D Day.
John was the youngest Sgt. Major in the British Army having used his elder, deceased brothers birth certificate to join. Patrick and John returned to Belfast living out the rest of their lives. (John also fought with Lawrence of Arabia).
My Granda was a proud member of the Connaught Rangers but was transferred into the Irish Fusiliers when the Connaught Rangers were disbanded.
He was injured twice during the war, the second time suffering severe Shell Shock and shrapnel wounds which would leave him hospitalized for two years. Part of that time spent in hospital after the war ended.
The family was from Galgorm Street in Ballymena but moved to McCleery Street in Belfast around 1901/1902.
Patrick Married Margaret Lillian Galbraith who was from a wealthy protestant family. Her family objected to her marrying a catholic and thus disowned her until the day she died. One day when coming home from work he was shot in an effort to end this relationship. He survived and the two married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Donegall Road, Belfast on 04 May 1919. Margaret Lillian converted to Catholicism which was expected in this day and age for 'mixed' marriages.
Together they had six children. They moved to live in Belfast and were proud to be from the "Barrack Wall". The children were Charlie, Mary, Davey, Sheila, Lizzie and Con who was the last fatal victim of the Shankill Butchers. Margaret Lillian died from Tuberculosis leaving Charlie to help raise his brothers and sisters. Mary & Sheila emigrated to Austraila.
After his war service Patrick was denied a service pension by the British Army stating he was not a member of the British Army as he was not signed up to serve before the war.
He died with his son Charlie present. Having gone to visit his dad, Granda Pat asked my dad Charlie to say a few prayers with him, the two of them prayed his favourite prayer - The Memorare.
After praying Charlie went to make a cup of tea for his dad and when he came back from the kitchen Granda had passed away peacefully in his favourite chair in front of the fire.
