Served in the U.S. Army from January 1942 to May 1945, and was a Tech 5 in the South Pacific. He was shot in the neck while in New Guinea and sent to a hospital in Australia. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Willard was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tennessee. On December 19, 1941, he married LaVern Biggerstaff in a double wedding with LaVern's twin sister, Mary LaVere and her husband Clifford Edwards. He and LaVern adopted one daughter.
