Served in the 37th Field Artillery at Kunu-Ri
Doc served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic during the Korean War and earned the rank of corporal. He was a combat-wounded disabled veteran, a prisoner of war, and was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, the Prisoner of War Award, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Korean Service Award Medal.
Tony was a son of Tony and Johanna Jaskewicz Zdanavage. On June 30, 1951 he married Esther Viola Rinehamer, and the couple raised two sons: Dennis and Daryl.
He was the National Founder and Coordinator of the acclaimed Korean War Awareness Project and gained national status for other various veterans projects that he was involved in. He authored and published the book, Korea: The War America Forgot to Remember. He was instrumental in starting the National Korean War Memorial Fund in Washington D.C., and constructed the first Korean War Memorial in his yard in Berwick, RR 1, which was dedicated in 1986. He received the first Purple Heart License plate in the state of Pennsylvania, which he was responsible for designing.
Tony was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart; and organized and chartered the local Order of the Purple Heart, Berwick Chapter, serving as its commander for the first five years of its existence. He was a founder of the Korean War Awareness Project, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a service officer for the Berwick Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Nescopeck American Legion.
