Carl served as a seaman first class with the Navy during World War II in the American, European and Pacific Theaters of Operation aboard the USS Alcor, the USS Philadelphia, the USS Davis and the USS Richmond. He received the American Freedom Medal, the European Theater Ribbon with two stars, the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received two Purple Heart Medals for wounds suffered in action. Following his military service, he had been employed by the Posten Taxi Co., Wilkes-Barre, for 35 years, and prior to his retirement due to ill health, he worked at Friendly's Restaurant, East End Boulevard, Wilkes-Barre, for 15 years.
