Byron was the older of two sons. He married Clara Loretta Fahringer on Feb 17, 1897 in Wilkes-Barre, and they had six children: Dale, Eva, George, Stanley, Irvin, and Arnold.

Byron was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad for 52 years, advancing from water boy to conductor on the Buffalo run. He was a member of Pioneer Lodge 153 of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, and the W.J. Byars Council, Junior Order United American Mechanics. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre.
