Mariela, the youngest of three daughters, was a third-grader at Sawyer Elementary School who made mostly A's and B's, her parents said.
"You never expect to get news like this,"said Nina Obediah, Crisostomos homeroom teacher from last year. "And when you do, I mean, it's devastating.
Even at age 8, her family said, Mariela responsibly followed her parents' rules, including the ones about bicycle riding.
"She always said where she was going," said Mariela's mother, Margarita Patino-Crisostomo.
"She was a good kid, so happy and made the best out of a situation," said Elizabeth Crisostomo, 17.
