He was married to Marguerite De La Motte, but they divorced shortly before his death. He committed suicide in 1936 by renting a yacht and sailing it into the ocean, where he jumped off the boat and drowned himself. His body washed up on the beach the next day. The character of 'Norman Maine' in "A Star is Born" is based on his life and death.
