Harry was a son of Mary Alice Shellhammer and Samuel Hunsinger. He was employed by the American Car and Foundry Company in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania as a machinist. On June 27, 1917, he married Emma Kishbaugh at Nescopeck, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Their son, Harry Jr., was born 8 days before Harry was killed in the Argonne Forest in France.
