On the morning of February 28, 1983, two men were rummaging through the basement of an abandoned apartment building at 5635 Clemens Avenue in St. Louis. They made a gruesome discovery, the body of a young black girl. Due to the lack of blood at the scene, police concluded that she had been killed elsewhere. Police checked local missing child reports, but could not discover the girl's identity. Simply named "Jane Doe," she became the subject of a dogged investigation, to discover who would murder her and who she was to begin with. Every potential lead led nowhere. Any time a clue arose, it lead to only more questions. She was eventually interred in Washington Park Cemetery nine months after her death. At the time of her death, "Jane Doe" was about 8-11 years old. She had a medium to dark complexion, and was about 4'10" tall and weighed 70 pounds. She had no scars, deformities, or any other infirmities, and appeared well-nourished. She was wearing a yellow V-necked sweater at the time of her death and her fingernails had two coats of red nail polish. It is no believed that she may have been from another part of the country, as no missing persons reports in the Bi-State area match her, nor do any others anywhere else. This remains one of the most baffling criminal cases in St. Louis history. Former detective Leroy Adkins commented on the case, "If we just knew who she was, I think it would be a burden lifted from my shoulders. Where is the mother? Where is the father? Where are her brothers or sisters? Where are her relatives? Where are her playmates, friends or classmates? Where are her neighbors, her teachers? Where are the people who knew and cared for her?
