Little Manley was a son of Thomas Lenoir Berry and Leola (Leona) Hollar.
The Berry family has been present in Burke county since the 1700's. Manley's father Lenoir Berry farmed in the Linville Township area for more than 10 years. Manley's grandfather was Barlett A. Manley McDowell Berry was the nephew of Forrest Berry who was once the county sheriff. Manley's father was a brother of Forrest. Forrest Berry was also a state Representative in the '30s.
The baby's grave is on an island that was on farmland covered by the building of Lake James in Burke & McDowell Counties. Folks who used to camp on the island say that at one time there were other graves there. If so, they were either moved or have been lost to time and the elements.
Many relatives of this little boy still live in the Burke county area today.
The island is located in the Linville River arm of Lake James.
