This is a story about the strongest woman I ever knew. My Mom. She was a remarkable woman and her children miss her very much. My Mom was close to death as I sat in the hospital holding her hands on 911 and silently cried as I watched the towers fall. I remember kissing my Mom's cheek and telling her how much I loved her and I was so glad she didn't see any of this. But 4 days later she joined all the people who lost their lives in this senseless act of terrorism.

Evelyn Rose Harrison was born on April 17,1929. She had a very hard life. She lost her mother when she was not quite 2. She also lost a sibling since her mother was 8 months pregnant when she died. The baby died with her. My Mother didn't know if she had a sister or a brother. Her mother passed away at the age of 18 from pneumonia and was buried on her 19th birthday.

My mother really never knew her father but years after he passed she found out she had a half brother and sister and got to know them through the years. She always regretted never knowing her father.

My Mother was shuffled between a host of relatives. She was eventually raised by her Aunt Ethel and her grandfather, Thomas Robinson, became her guardian. He came to see her every night and on Saturdays he would take her shopping at the Goodwill store. It was on one of those trips that Mom got her first pair of rollerskates.

Roller skating and ice skating became her favorite activities. Mom enjoyed school and was a good student but quit school during World War II to go to work. Initally , she worked at a soda fountain downtown. She then worked at the "Linen Thread" factory, where camouflage nets were made. Mom always said that wartime was very sad especially during the holidays because of the absence of male relatives.

She eventually gained employment in the shipping department of "Baltimore Type" (Manufactures of type for newspapers printing) where she met and married James Shores. After dating for 1 1/2 years they married in 1948. They moved to Salisbury Maryland where my Dad was born and raised and had 4 children. Bruce Clifton 1950-2003, Deborah Luann 1953, Tami Sue 1957 and Traci Leigh 1964. She and my Father divorced and my Mother later married my Stepfather who was very abusive and very mean. It was a very hard time for all of us but we made it through it because of the love we all had for each other. After she divorced him life became better.

My Mother was a loving Mother but the light in her eyes were her grandchildren. She was also the loving grandmother of 7 grandsons. My sister Debbie had 3 boys, Scott Christopher,Todd Ryan and Brandon Matthew. Then I had Justin Ryan, Cody Tyler and Dylan Matthew whom she adored also. My son Jacob Bruce was born after my Mother passed. It was very hard on me because she had been there throughout every pregnancy and was there when all my boys were born. I was very depressed. I wanted my Mom. I wanted her to meet her new grandson. Then one evening my best friend and I watched with tears streaming down our face as my infant son smiled up at the ceiling and raised his arms up and softly spoke baby talk. He was talking to an Angel. My Mom. I know it. I just felt it in my heart. It was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. It helped knowing my Mom saw her grandson. I can still see the smile he had on his little face as he "talked" to his guardian angel. He met his Mom-Mom.

She was a wonderful person who was very strong willed and loved life. She survived a quadruple bypass in 1995 and a another bypass in 1997. She also had diabetes, high blood pressure and too many bouts of congestive heart failure to count. She survived them but unfortunately became the victim of Alzheimers and Dementia. We lost her to heart failure 4 days after 9/11. But we know she is in Heaven with our brother Bruce who passed away suddenly in January 2003. We miss them both terribly but they will never be forgotten.

I found this poem that I thought fit my Mom perfectly since her middle name was Rose.

~IF ROSES GROW IN HEAVEN~

If Roses grow in Heaven,
Lord pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother's arms
and tell her they're from me.

Tell her I love and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.

Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there's an ache within my heart,
that will never go away.

I love you Mom with all my heart. You will never be forgotten.
