Betty Jean (Mitchell) Kunkle, 84, of Black Lick, PA passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana, PA.

The daughter of Margaret Viola Mitchell and raised by her grandparents, Arlie and Margaret Mitchell, she was born December 4, 1931 in Blairsville, PA.

She graduated from Blairsville High School, Class of 1949, and worked for W.T. Grant Company, Blairsville, for 13 years and retired from Aging Services in 1996.

Betty was a faithful member of Black Lick United Methodist Church since 1959, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Adult Christian Fellowship. She also was a member of the Black Lick Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary since 1959, Advisory Board of Aging Services, Inc., Indiana, Ombudsman Volunteer for Aging Services and a member of the Chestnut Hills Social Center, Blairsville.

Betty was selected Volunteer of the Year in 2003 for Indiana County by the Community Action Senior Corps.

She loved spending time with her family, going camping with her children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time at the Chestnut Hills Social Center where she decorated and helped in the kitchen

Survived by daughters, Kathleen A. Hullenbaugh and her husband, Ken, of Blairsville and Beverly J. Schweigert and her husband, Frank, of Blairsville; a son, Raymond E. Kunkle, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Indiana; beloved grandchildren, Ken Hullenbaugh and his wife, Rebecca, of Blairsville; Rebecca Schweigert and her fiancé, Zack Hunter, of Latrobe; Jillian (Schweigert) Jones and her husband, Justin, of Pittsburgh and Hunter Kunkle of Indiana; a sister, Annabell Lowman of Marion Center; sister-in-law, Janet (Kunkle) Hebenthal of Tallahassee, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents; her husband, Raymond E. “Dutch” Kunkle, Sr. whom she married August 22, 1958 in Black Lick and passed away on January 29, 1968; brother, Charles Marsh; stepfather, Earl Marsh; special aunt, Sara Jane Mitchell and uncles Arlie Mitchell and Fred Hoffman.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Brett M. Dinger officiating.

Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville
