Mr. Grogan was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Archbald, Pa., a son of the late Charles B. and Mildred Burke Grogan Sr. A Warren resident since 1986, he was a former resident of Pittsburgh. He was a graduate of Archbald High School and Temple University and attended class at St. Peters College, Jersey City, N.J. While attending St. Peters College, he worked as yard conductor for the Jersey City Railroad. As a young man he was active in politics and served on the Archbald City Council and had served as mayor of Archbald in the early 1960s. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a staff sergeant with the Headquarters Battery 548 FAB. He retired as executive director of the Chief Cornplanter Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Warren, having served 33 years as a professional scout leader. He began his scouting career with the Forest Lakes Council in Scranton, Pa., as district executive and with the Bucktail Council, DuBois, Pa. He then served in the East Valley area council in Forest Hills, Pa., where he served as camping director, program director, and field director before being selected as council executive for Chief Cornplanter Council, where he served for 11 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1997. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, a national camping society with the BSA, and received the Indian name of Mactagen, which means fighter. He was wood badge-trained and directed numerous national camping schools for the BSA. Mr. Grogan was a graduate of the 260th class of the National Training School for Professional Scouters. He received the St. George Award for serving youth from Bishop Leonard of the Pittsburgh Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. After his retirement, he received the Silver Beaver, the highest award bestowed for a volunteer scouter from the Chief Cornplanter Council. He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, where he was a lector. He was past Grand Knight of the Warren Knights of Columbus Council 964 and presently served as treasurer of the 4th Degree Assembly 963. Mr. Grogan served as past president of the Serra Club of Warren County. He served on the advisory committee of the Chief Cornplanter Council and the Warren RSVP, as past president of the Warren Rotary Club, St. Marys and Braddock, Pa. Rotary clubs, and Lions Club of Archbald, Pa., and had served as chairman of the United Way of Warren for two years. He was also a member of the Warren Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 328, Archbald, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Verrone Grogan; a son, Gregory E. Grogan, Pittsburgh; a sister, Mrs. Gerald (Mary Jane) Curtis, Seituate, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Grogan, on Feb. 4, 2005.
