Winona S. Farr, 93, of the Ruth Smith Center, Sheffield, died Friday, March 2 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Erie, Pa.

Winona was born in Kinzua, Pa., December 11, 1918 to Claude and Elva McAvoy. She later moved to Sheffield where she lived the rest of her life. She was very close to her family and loved them all dearly. She particularly enjoyed the family functions when her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren were all together.

She loved reading, dancing, sports (especially the Pittsburgh Steelers) and playing cards. As a young woman, she loved school and took part in many programs. She belonged to the Drama Club, was a member of the Debate Team, and was Treasurer of the TriHiY Club. She was on the HiTimes staff of which she was the Social Editor. She had the leading role in her senior class play, and she was a cheerleader for the Sheffield Wolverines. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Ruth M. Smith Center. She wrote a biweekly article in the Valley Voice. These reminiscent articles were a favorite with many people. With her sharp memory, she was able to recall people and places from years back which delighted those who read her column. When macular degeneration took most of her vision, she regretfully had to cease writing her stories.

She eloped with her late husband, Joseph Corbin Farr, on August 1, 1941, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Erie, Pa. They were married for 63 years until his death on September 12, 2004. Their surviving children are Tim (Mary Ann) of Warren; Mike (Mary Rose) of Warren; and Crystal (Jack) of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by grandchildren Marshall, Michael (Inge), Michele, Dan (Charlene), Joe (Amanda), Karin (David), Kathy (Brant), and Kevin (fiance Sheila) and stepgrandchildren Jason and Jeff (Jeanine). Her greatgrandchildren are Tobin, Samantha, David, McKayla, Caden, Gracyn, Addyson, Teagan, Alexandra, Carson, Alyssa, and Ava. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by all of her siblings: Evelyn Helm, Jack McAvoy, Joanne Steffan, and Romola O'Leary.

As the proud mother of three, she was a den mother for the Boy Scouts and a Girl Scout Brownie leader. She loved being a mother and always had something baked for them when they got home from school.

When her children got older, she went to work at Erik's Machine Shop in Sheffield, then became employed by the Blair Corporation in the Customer Service Department where she retired after 26 years.
