---- — Lovingly surrounded by family, the Rev. John Dobbs Patterson died at noon Saturday (9-22-12) in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township. He was 81.

Familiarly known as "Jack" to friends and family, he was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Hilliards, Butler County, to Harry L. and Hazel Patterson.

He was married to Dorothy L. Patterson on Aug. 26, 1951. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2009.

Jack was a graduate of Akron (Ohio) East High School, Geneva College and Westminster Theological Seminary.

An ordained minister in the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church for 61 years, he served parishes in Wampum; Cecilton, Md.; Hopewell, Md.; Eastbrook; West Middlesex; Union City; Chippewa; Butler; and Indiana. He served as superintendent of the Johnstown District from 1978-84. He was past president of the National Council on Evangelism. Jack was known for his excellence in preaching, pastoral care, and storytelling.

Upon his retirement in 1992, he and his wife, Dottie, moved to their "dream home" on Oak Hill Drive in Grove City.

Staying active, Jack pastored Barkeyville United Methodist Church and served as chaplain at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, where he was a resident the last few months of his life.

He finished his clergy career by serving interim pastorates at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Wolf Creek Township; and Millbrook Presbyterian Church, Jackson Township.

He also fulfilled a lifelong aspiration as a sportswriter by covering high school sports in the local papers.

Jack is survived by four sons, J. Douglas Patterson and his wife Ramona, Baden, Pa.; Daniel R. Patterson and his wife Yumi, Lilburn, Ga.; Donald L. Patterson and his wife Terri, Kosciusko, Miss.; and Dean L. Patterson and his wife Mary Ann, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Brooke, Nathan, Hannah, Joseph, Erina, Jonathan and his wife Amelia, Katie, Benjamin, Joseph and Rachelle; three great-grandchildren, Britney, Emily and Keller; three sisters, Joyce Thornbury, JoAnn Warner and her husband Ray, and Jeanne Babcock and her husband Russ; and one brother, Jim Patterson and his wife Doris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Jack and Dottie Patterson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o United Methodist Foundation, 223 Fourth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, 15222.
