Sgt. Mickel D. Garrigus of Elma, Wash., graduated from Elma High School in 2001 and enlisted in the Army in June 2001. He trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., to be a military policeman. Following basic and advanced individual training and was assigned to the 571st Military Police Company based at Fort Lewis, Wash. In September 2005, he was reassigned to Fort Drum and deployed to Iraq with his unit in November 2006. His military education includes the Warrior Leader Course and the Unit Armorer Training Course. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. He is survived by his wife and son. He was 24.
