Bashore dropped out of high school (and falsified his age) to join the army in World War I. He worked behind the lines in the motor pool, being discharged as a master sergeant upon breaking his arm while cranking a truck. After driving trucks and working briefly in agriculture, he became a railroad conductor on the Pacific Electric cars from 1919 to 1940. He had a 10-acre lemon grove in Glendora. He was appointed to the Glendora City Council and was elected as a representative in the California State Legislature. He served there from 1938 to his untimely death in 1944. Were it not for his unexpected death, there were political movements under way to advance him to either the U.S. Congress or lieutenant governor.
