Noah was familiarly known as "Gene" or "Eugene" to his family and business acquaintances. He attended public schools in Covina, California. He loved to read and was often seen reading a book under the shade of a tree on his father's orange grove ranch. He graduated from high school in 1913. He attended one year at USC before transferring to the University of Chicago where he graduated in 1916 with a degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. It was at Chicago that he assumed the name "N. Eugene" because he hated his given and middle names. His wife, Myrtle, said that his middle name was Edwin although no other documentation records that. He taught English and was principal of a high school in Grangeville, Idaho, before entering the service in World War I. He was assigned to military intelligence and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant. He married Myrtle Fuller in 1919 in Berkeley, California. After a year as an advertising copy writer, he joined an investment banking firm. He continued with this firm for forty years until his retirement in 1960. He and Myrtle were the parents of three children. He passed away at the age of 73.
