John was a farmer and the family moved to Adams Township, Darke County, Ohio, some time in the 1850s. He had a 96-acre farm about 1.5 miles northeast of Horatio. John died at age 71 in Adams Township. John could neither read nor write. In his will he stipulated that his tombstone be a "plain one."
