COOPE, J. Alan, 66, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2001 after a lengthy illness.

Dr. Cope is survived by his wife, Carol of Tucson; son, James (Lawrie); and daughter, Brenda of Denver, Colorado.

He was born May 4, 1935 in England, and received his Ph.D. in Applied Geochemistry in 1958 from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London, England. He joined Newmont Mining Corporation in 1958 and worked in numerous countries throughout his 33-year career with Newmont. In the early 1960's, he was a co-discover of the Carlin gold deposit in Nevada.

In 1970, Dr. Cooper was the principal organizer and founding president of the Association of Exploration Geochemists. He served as the President of the Geological Association of Canada from 1985-1986., and actively supported the Society of Economic Geologists, the Toronto Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.

At the time of his retirement form Newmont in 1991,he held the position of Director of Geochemistry. After retirement, he continued his membership in numerous societies, and participated on several advisory committees. In February 2001, he was honored as a Distinguished Member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, and in May 2001 he was awarded Honorary Membership in the Association of Exploration Geochemists.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 7th at 3:00 p.m. at the Adair Funeral Home, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. in Tucson, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions an be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 1636 N. Swan, Suite 151, Tucson, Arizona 85712. (520) 321-7989.
