2nd Lt US Army Air Forces

63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group

He and eight crewmembers took off in a B-24 Liberator from Dobodura in New Guinea on November 4, 1943, on an armed reconnaissance mission over the Bismarck Sea. One of the crew spotted a convoy of Japanese ships and was told to follow the convoy and report back. Four hours later, the crew radioed from the B-24 that they had made three direct hits on the convoy and destroyed their target. That was the last radio contact military personnel had with the crew. In March 2002, a local government official contacted a team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command through the US Embassy. The team was exploring unrelated WWII aircraft crash sites in Papua, New Guinea.

Arthur served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-24D #42-40972, 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on June 15, 1942 at Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

Arthur was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, which took off from Dobodura Airfield on an armed reconnaissance mission to shadow a ten vessel convoy off Kavieng, crashed near the village of Imon, roughly 45 miles north of Lae, during the war.

His B-24D #42-40972, in their last message, reported "Three direct hits on a CL [Light Cruiser] or CA [Heavy Cruiser], 0.3005 15100E target destroyed".

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
