Melvin 0. Charlton was killed in action only a few weeks before German resistance was brought to an end. He entered service in May, 1944, and had been in the Army less than a year, overseas only three months with the infantry of Patton's Third Army. Melvin served with the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division and was buried in Carlyle, Illinois on April 16, 1949. Survivors include Melvin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Charlton of Carlyle, Illinois, Melvin's widow, and two sons and a daughter.

U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1970 lists form signed for by Cluster J. Charlton, Carlyle, Illinois on 04/18/1949. Back of the form indicates that a corrected DOB should be 11/15/1921.

Suggested edit: According to military records which I posted, Charlton went missing in action in Germany rather than France. I added a little more detail to Fold3 (https://www.fold3.com/memorial/638599020/melvin-o-charlton/stories) but I believe the document is correct since on the date of his death Charlton's unit fought its way to Irsch, Germany.
