Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Crook, Nebraska on October 15, 1942 and volunteered for parachutist duty. He was sent directly to Camp Blanding to join with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment which has just been activated and was undergoing basic training. He was assigned to B Company.

After completion of basic training, the regiment moved to Fort Benning, GA for jump school and then on to Camp Mackall, NC for advanced training.

Pvt Chase was killed in action on the Their-du-Mont Ridge in Belgium on January 7, 1945 during the Battle of The Bulge.
