The memorial was originally created by the U.S. Dept of Veteran's Affairs. Sergeant Adams was part of the Second Infantry Medical Detachment. He was awarded the Purple Heart in September, 1944 for wounds received and the role he played in administering first aid and evacuating his comrades to safety in Amanvillers, France. He was killed in action in Stromberg, Germany. Posthumously, he was awarded the Bronze Star and a second Purple Heart.
