He was serving aboard the LCI-471(G), "Landing Craft Infantry", the day he was killed. His LCI was helping to provide cover and support to Underwater Demolition Teams as they swam ashore to inspect waterline defenses prior to the actual invasion of Iwo Jima two days later. The LCI-471 came within a thousand yards of shore and was struck by several artillery rounds, as well as small arms fire, before it withdrew.
