Robert F. McGrath
12/07/1936-10/01/2013

Robert F. McGrath, an active member of the community during his residency in Pascagoula and in Vancleave, died Tuesday night at Poydras Home in New Orleans. He was 76.
Bob was born on December 7, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia, and grew up in Pascagoula, MS. Sports of all kinds were a passion. He played all sports and was the first 5 year letterman in Football at his Alma Mater, Our Lady of Victories. After graduating, Bob coached football at OLV. He also coached Dizzy Dean baseball for many years, across all age ranges, and was involved in expanding the league and building the parks. For OLV, he was always involved in activities, running the Christmas Tree sales, calling Bingo, fundraising drives, or delivering gumbo. He was always there to volunteer.

Bob was active in the Knights of Columbus and Elks from a young age. He was instrumental in the formation of the Holy Spirit Men's Club and this group later became the Father Dennis Harlow Knights of Columbus Council. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.
Bob had many diverse interests. He was an avid hunter and took great joy in teaching young people the art of being in the woods. The success of the young men he taught about hunting and conservation was one of the joys of his life.
Bob was a master carpenter. After his retirement from Litton Industries, he helped others build their homes. He was always available to assist his friends with repairs of their homes. This was especially appreciated after Hurricane Katrina damaged the homes of so many of his friends and people in the community. He built his own home in Vancleave, with his children and grandchildren in mind, making sure there was plenty of space and outdoor fun.
When Holy Spirit Catholic Church was being built, Bob took an active role in completing the sanctuary. He and Mr. Gary Young built the church's altar and baptismal font. Prior to his move to Vancleave, he was instrumental in organizing Holy Spirit Parish's Lenten fish fry. It was at these early fish fries that the children and adults of the parish began to call him Uncle Bob. He became the person to call when people wanted a fish fry or a shrimp boil, and always looked forward to the next event.
After retiring, Bob also began pottery. He became an accomplished potter. His family and friends looked forward to Christmas when he would give everyone an example of his excellent work. He very much enjoyed his new friends at the pottery studio.
In his youth, Bob worked many jobs including as an attendant at Speedy Jones Gas Station during high school. Friends have commented that they all came to Bob to help them learn to work on their cars. He was a good and loyal friend and always ready to help someone.
An annual hayride was always eagerly anticipated each Halloween. It was held on a path full of ghouls and goblins in the woods on Bob's property. He enjoyed pulling the trailer full of laughing and screaming children down the path where typical scary sights were around each corner. Bob's warmth and concern drew children to him. He was famous for teasing the kids, and for his corny jokes. He is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Survived by two siblings, Rev. Msgr. John R. G. McGrath of Vancleave, and Mary McGrath Abraham of Gautier. Two children, John B. McGrath of Pascagoula, Melanie L. McGrath and her husband Thomas R. Ehle of New Orleans, and grandchildren Kelsey Richardson McGrath, Connor Donahue, Isabelle Donahue, Carley McGrath, and Cassidy McGrath.

Preceded by his son Robert F. McGrath, Jr., his mother and father Cora Belle and J. R. G. McGrath, and siblings James McGrath and Rita McGrath.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 7, 3:30 pm, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be at 5:00 followed by a reception at Rev. Msgr. John McGrath Hall across from the church. Condolences may be expressed online at www.obryantokeefe.com
