Oscar was a freight and passenger engineer for the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad (Frisco). In 1940, he was named as the engineer of the Firefly streamlined passenger train, operating between Kansas City and Oklahoma City. Although most of his career was spent in the steam era, he was the first Frisco engineer to take a diesel passenger train out of Kansas City's Union Station. He was very proud of being chosen to operate the new diesel equipment, and studied six months for his diesel test.
