Klaus was born at Vester Vedsted, near Ribe, Denmark, on May 14, 1886.
He departed Copenhagen on November 18, 1903 on the SS United States, and arrived at Ellis Island in New York City on December 1, 1903. He was sponsored by his uncle, Hans Andersen, of Rosedale, (Kansas City) Kansas. He was traveling with his older sister, Frederikka, and arrived with ten dollars in his pocket.
He and Anna Simonsen were married in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 12, 1910, by the Rev. H.S. Church.
He became a citizen of the United States on September 2, 1924, at the Johnson County Courthouse, in Olathe, Kansas.
