Lafayette Bills
Lafayette Bills was born on May 31,1824 in Bourbon County, KY to Alvin Wilson and Mary Nelson Sims Bills. On October 16, 1844 he married Mary Jane Horton in Aberdeen, Ohio. They had 3 children Martha, James Wilson and Laura Elizabeth, who died when she was a baby. They lived in the communities of Flat Rock and Ruddles Mills in Bourbon County.
Lafayette Bills was a slave owner. Several censuses from his life show him as the owner of several slaves. This explains why he joined the Confederate States Army on Aug 3, 1861 at Camp Boone, TN. He enlisted as a second corporal. On February 1, 1864 he was promoted to first Corporal. While in the Confederate Army he fought many battles in Tennessee and Georgia. He was captured by the Union Army on May 15,1864 in Resaca, Georgia. His Confederate military records say that he "deserted." We know that is not true since Union military records show that beginning on May 16, 1864 he was prisoner of war of the Union army. He was transported to the Military Prison in Louisville, KY and then onto Camp Morton in Indianapolis, IN. He was released from Camp Morton on Dec 22, 1864 on his own oath after being a prisoner of war for seven months.
Lafayette returned to Paris, KY where he continued to live with his wife. He worked several jobs. He was a "Well-to-do" farmer and later in life a lumber clerk. He and his family moved to the Paris City limits where he lived out the remainder of his life. Lafayette Bills passed away in February 1886. At the time of his death, he had only one survivor, his only his son, James Wilson.
