In 1864, Lovett was permitted a leave of absence from his Company (He was a private in Company H, First Arkansas Infantry, Union Army) to go to Little Rock , Arkansas to attend a State Convention as an elected official. The Union General Assembly began on April 11, 1864. Lovett was ill and was at home near the Titsworth Springs schoolhouse which at that time was located between Magazine and Paris . Armed men came to his home and physically removed him. It was written that his wife, Amanda was begging and pleading to not hurt Lovett as he was dragged from his house. Lovett was found a few days later, hung by his neck and shot on Short Mountain Creek. He was buried nearby by the women in a shallow grave. Later, his body was exhumed and transferred by wagon to Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co., Arkansas to be buried at the National Cemetery .
