BLACK, John - Died at his residence in Bentonville, Arkansas on Tuesday, December 24th, 1901 at 2 o'clock p.m., John Black, aged seventy years. Funeral services were held at the family residence on Wednesday, December 25th 1901 at 3 o'clock p.m., interment taking place immediately after services in the Odd Fellows cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic order. "The good die young," the poet tells and 'tis true. Another says "How long we live not years but actions tell," and so Uncle John at the age of seventy years, was o'er young to die, for the world has need of such as he. He was that noblest work of God, an honest man. Not only in a pecuniary lived his life simply, honorably, nobly, doing good whene'er the opportunity arose. The news of his death cast a sad influence over all the Christmas festivities and in many homes the theme on Christmas day was the life and character of "Uncle" John Black. [Benton County Democrat - Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas - December 26, 1901]

Mrs. Mollie Tinnin was called home from Maysville last Monday to the death bed of her father, John Black. We regret to say that Mrs. Tinnin did not reach home until an hour after his death. [Benton County Democrat - Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas - December 26, 1901]

He was a Confederate soldier, who served in Company F, 34th Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A. . His widow, S.A. Black filed for an Arkansas Confederate pension #03080 on 9 August 1905, in Benton County, AR. The pension indicated he served from 1862 to 1864 and died 24 December 1901. I believe his widow was the Sophia A. Black who is buried near him. [Thank you Robert
