George Beecher "Sam" Hicks, Jr., 72, of Harrison, was born in Western Grove, Arkansas in 1941.

He graduated from Western Grove High School in 1958. He joined the Navy in 1963 and was trained as an aircraft engine mechanic and earned the Viet Nam Service Medal, the Viet Nam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He received an honorary discharge in 1967.

Sam married Maxine Criner and together they raised two children. He was a storyteller, a craftsman, and a great cook. By trade, Sam worked as a truck driver and a carpenter and retired from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

Along with his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Suzella Hicks; his brothers, Ford Hicks and Herbert Hicks; his aunts and uncles; and his in-laws, Xenia and Bert Criner.

Sam is survived by his wife, Maxine Hicks, of Harrison; his daughter, Misty Dawn (Morgan) Hicks, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; his son and daughter-in-law, George Beecher "GB" and Kristen Hicks, III, of Harrison; his brother, Howard Hicks, of California; three grandsons, Benjamin Gabriel Hicks, Jonathan Elliot Hicks, and Nathaniel George Hicks; and a host of other family many dear friends. He was well loved and well known as a big man with a big sense of humor and an even bigger heart.

Visitation is 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Funeral service is 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home, with Pastor Eric Goff and Rev. Arlis Thrasher officiating.

Interment is in Western Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Eddie Criner, Aubrey Criner, Danny Criner, Joey Criner, Jamie Criner, Darren Criner, Rodney Smith, Jim Snipes and Bob Parkhill.

Honorary pallbearers are Howard Hicks, Ted Kastner, Beverly Kirby, Bruce Stull and Nathan Jenkins.

George Hicks, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Hicks of Western Grove, completed basic training recently at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
The nine week training includes naval orientation, history and organization, seamship, ordnance and gunnery, military drill, first aid and survival.
During the training recruits received tests and interviews which determine their future assignments in the Navy. Upon completing the program they are assigned to service schools for technical training or to ships and stations for on the job training in a Navy rating specialty.
Naval training produces the power in seapower by supplying qualified personnel to man the ships, planes, and shore stations of today's Navy.
