My dearest Dad was born in a time of hardship, but when families were close. He was a very gentle man, loving, and caring, but also a great worrier. He worried about everything, he was affected by things that he could do nothing about - I have inherited his worrying nature! During his time in the Army, he always had time to listen to other men and offer his understanding and help. I remember Mum telling me that his Commanding Officer had broken his journey at Northampton to come to see her, and tell her what a well respected man he was.

He was a very talented man. He designed and built a four wheeler bike, which is pictured in the photograph, and he and Mum spent many happy hours touring the countryside. I have many pictures that he painted, and his woodwork was magnificent. He made our Daughter a wonderful rocking horse. He could do anything he turned his hand too, and was always making something for other people. When I was a child, he used to take me to the countryside where we would fish, and pick flowers and blackberries and he would tell me all about the animals and wildlife. We would wander the battlefield at Naseby where one of our Civil War battles took place, and he would tell me all about it. Happy memories of my childhood with him and Mum. When I got married and our Daughter was born, he was so thrilled, and carried on his traditions with her. He was such a wonderful Grandfather and he and Mum treasured her, and she was devoted to them.

I remember the wonderful camping holidays we had together with a friend and her Mum and Dad. My Dad used to do funny things to make us laugh - he was a real character! One day, were all sitting by the river fishing, and we had not had a bite the whole afternoon. Suddenly, Dad stood up and jumped into the river fully clothed! It was not very deep, you could stand up in it, which I was thankful for because he could not swim! His hat floated to the surface and then this grinning face appeared with his cheeky grin! We could not stop laughing, and Mum asked him why he had done it, and he said he wanted to cheer us up because we hadn't had any luck fishing! He said he had not thought about it, he just did it! Those were the warm, wonderful days of my childhood, and looking back, I wish with all my heart that I could recapture them, but my memories are so special!

When he developed heart trouble, I spent many hours with him
reassuring him that he would be OK. I am so glad that my Mum was strong because my Dad was so afraid when he was ill, but all our Christian Faith saw us through. He was only 65 when we lost him, and that day I lost not only my lovely Dad, but a dear friend. I thank God for the mildest, gentlest man I have ever known.

He is buried in Towcester Road Cemetary, Northampton. England.
