KILLED IN ACTION

PFC Alfred Beard, age 21, was killed in action on Iwo Jima, Feb. 25, 1945, while serving with the United States Marine Corps.

Private 1st class, U.S. Marine Corp. Reserve, company I, 3rd battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd division. Enlisted March 1, 1944.

Son of Charles and Sarah Ella Steward Beard of Duncansville. He was born Dec. 15, 1923, attended Duncansville grade school and Hollidaysburg High School. He was employed at Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards at Baltimore, MD at entry into military service.

He is survived by his mother, six brothers and two sisters. William J, Charles D, Frank P, Mrs. Glen Lear, Earl, Samuel, Jack, Betty. Barbara is deceased.

Alfred attended the Duncansville Lutheran church where a military funeral was held by pastor, Rev. G.B. Harman. Members of Fort Fetter post 516 Hollidaysburg conducted military rites at the service and the cemetery. (Likely 4/14/1945)
