Silverback Western Lowland Gorilla. Born in the San Francisco Zoo, the 422 pound ape was the main attraction of the zoo's Gorilla World exhibit. His full name was M'Kubwa, he had a tremendous spirit and a legacy as a gentle sensitive individual who warmed the hearts of the crowds that viewed him. He lived his entire life in captivity and fathered three babies. Suffering from chronic bronchitis for several years, he got international publicity as the first gorilla ever to have surgery to remove a deceased lung. Eleven days after his operation he succumbed to internal bleeding at age 29.
