Prissy's life began as a Tale of Sorrow. A fisherman on the St Johns River noticed a monster in the guise of a human dumping a sack into the river. He approached the spot where the sack was dumped and fished it out of the water only to discover it contained a litter of Labrador Retriever puppies. Prissy was the only survivor. She was subsequently placed up for adoption with the Putnam County Humane Society, and was within 48 hours of being euthanized when my wife and I chose her for adoption. The first time I saw her, she was wagging her tail so vigorously, she was shaking her cage and she was barking and pouncing at the cage door. I adopted her with the intent of having her serve the Family as an outdoors, working dog and a companion to my Scottish Terrier, Scotty Mac. My wife, Susan, quickly derailed that plan and turned her from a former "pound hound"/ working dog into a 85 lb luxury loving, pampered and spoiled, shedding machine and pet. Prissy was treated to a wonderful life of pick-up truck rides, sleeping on a couch, enjoying air conditioning, and delighting in a holiday diet of turkey, goose, steak, eggnog, champaign, beer and all the other seasonal delicacies enjoyed by the Family. She loved any type of Bud beer, and if you opened a bottle or popped a can in the house, she would come running, sit patiently and stare holes through you until you shared by pouring her a little bit. When my son was born in 2000, Prissy moved from the livingroom to sleeping in the door way of my son's bedroom where she could better watch and protect the new arrival. Her emotions were very Human. She loved Christmas, and she grieved for several weeks after her companion, Scotty Mac, passed away in 2002. During 1997, while playing with my father, she pounced on his badly infected big toe and broke it open. It subsequently drained well, and healed within a week. He would have probably lost that toe if Prissy had not opened it with her weight. She circled me joyfully when I returned from deployments to Bosnia in 1997 and the Horn of Africa in 2005. She enjoyed playing with my son's soccor ball, and the last Christmas that she was alive, she tried her best to run after the soccor ball and play with Caleb and his 4 cousins in our back yard. She developed debilitive arthritis in 2002 and a cancerous tumor in her neck, which had to be surgically removed. Her health rapidly deteriorated, she quickly lost weight, but her will to live and stay with the Family was extremely strong. After reaching the point that she could not stand up without assistance, and crying and suffering through the night while on pain medication, I had her euthanized at Animal Health Center in East Palatka. In human years, the Old Girl would have been 98.6 years old upon her passing. I refused to abandon her when she needed support the most and was with her at the end. She died with her head in my lap, as if she were taking a nap with me on the couch at Home. Her absence was felt immediately throughout the household and all members of the Family grieved her passing. I was devastated by her death, still grieve and have hope Prissy has been reunited with Scotty Mac, Scruff and Mom Moody, free of her pain and disease.

LIFE: 13 Years, 3 Months, 13 Days

CAUSE OF DEATH: Cancer/ Euthanized

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
"There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.// It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.// Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass.// When a beloved pet dies , the pet goes to this special place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.// The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again.// They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing.// They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.// So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !// The nose twitches !// The ears are up !// The eyes are staring !// And this one suddenly runs from the group !// You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.// Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.// Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated."

A DOG'S PRAYER
"Treat me kindly, my beloved Master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your "voice" is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest house in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved Master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands."
