John Wilford Daugherty, 77, of Oak Ridge, died suddenly in a bicycling accident on Aug. 25, 2009.

John was born in Chicago, Ill., on Aug. 27, 1931, to Anna Irene Ryan Daugherty and John Benedict Daugherty. In addition to his parents, a sister, Patricia Daugherty Gach, preceded him in death.

John was of the Catholic faith and attended parochial schools in Chicago, including St. Leo's High School where he was on the track team. He was a loyal alumnus supporter of St. Leo's.

John attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, for a year, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two years.

He spent most of his military career at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, working with survival equipment and as a parachute rigger.

He was also the Petty Officer in charge of ground crews, oxygen shops, and fabric shops and attended special training schools at Alameda Naval Base, Calif., and Moffett Field, Calif.

Following military service, he enrolled in Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service Degree in International Transportation.

During his tenure at Georgetown, he worked as a station agent for National Airlines, serving in various capacities in the Air Line Employees Association, International.

In 1962, he joined the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge as a management intern and became a personnel management specialist, where his work included recruitment, selection and placement, personnel counseling, position classification, and salary administration.

He was a charter member and past president of the Tennessee College Placement Association, a professional organization. After a successful career, he retired from the Department of Energy in 1989.

John was an avid bicyclist and long-time member of the Smoky Mountain Wheelmen Bicycle Club of Knoxville, planning and leading several challenging rides. He served for a number of years as club treasurer and developed the challenging Not-As-Hard-As-The-Assault on Mt. Mitchell bicycle ride (NAAHAM). He rode the actual Assault on Mt. Mitchell five times.

In 1993, he rode in a 7-week bicycle tour from Los Angeles to Boston, in support of the legal division of the League of American Wheelmen and the Epilepsy Foundation of Knoxville.

He has been on several bike tours in Oregon and Washington State, and has won age-group medals in bicycle racing at the State and/or National levels of the U.S. Cycling Federation and the Senior Olympics.

John was an expert planner of family trips and enjoyed touring with commercial companies and attending Elderhostels. His favorite tour was in the Marquesas Islands on a small passenger/freighter ship, the Aranui.

He supported the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, frequently ushering at concerts and was active for many years at the Oak Ridge Playhouse, both onstage and off.

John is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Lou Williams Daugherty; sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Thomas Stokjic, Ocala, Fla.; sister-in-law, Becky DeArmond and husband, David, of Lenoir City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was dearly loved by family and friends, who will always remember his honesty, fairness, hospitality, and his love of his red Porsche, as well as his adamant dislike of sheep, cheese, and broccoli.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at the United Church Chapel-on-the-Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Oak Ridge Playhouse, P.O. Box 5705, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, or the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, P.O. Box 4271, Oak Ridge, TN 37831. Arrangements by Cremation Options, Inc.,
