Although the father of our country, George Washington, died in 1797, he was still very much alive in the hearts and minds of the citizens of the young country in the early 19th Century. Many baby boys were named GEORGE WASHINGTON.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARPENTER was born about 1805 in Pennsylvania, probably in Philadelphia.

Sometime before 1837 he married Rachael Barnholt, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Barnholt. Their children included William Henry (wife: Mary Pembroke), George Washington, Anna (husband: Albert Roat), Rachel, Lewis, Sarah (husband: Thomas Hunter), Richard (wife: Eva Phenegar)and James Knox Polk Carpenter.

For most of his adult life George lived in the Sharswood area of Philadelphia. He worked as a messenger or letter carrier until he was 80.

He was originally interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery but was eventually reinterred in the Carpenter Family Plot at Northwood.
