John Patrick Mahoney was born in County Wicklow Ireland in 1844. He came to America around 1865 and settled in East Norwegian Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. In the 1870 census he was living there with his mother Mary, his brother, Thomas, and his sister, Mary. He worked repairing coal cars.
On January 1, 1872, he married Ellen Fogarty, the daughter of James Fogarty and Bridget Wall. They were married at St. Stephen's Church in Port Carbon, Schuylkill County, Pennsyvlania. They had seven children: Joseph, Mary, James, Bessie, Thomas, Agnes, and Marcella. All were born in Pottsville, except his youngest daughter, Marcella, who was born in Philadelphia in December 1888.
In the 1880 census he was working as a laborer. In 1900 in Philadelphia, he worked as a blacksmith. By 1910 they had bought a house at 2817 Poplar Street in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia. John P. Mahoney died at the age of 92 in 1936.
