Ellen Fogarty Mahoney was the daughter of Irish immigrants: Bridget Wall and James Fogarty and the oldest of there eleven children. She married John Mahoney on January 1, 1872 at St. Stephen's Church in Port Carbon, Schuylkill County, Pennsyvlania. They had seven children: Joseph, Mary, James, Bessie, Thomas, Agnes and Marcella. All were born in Pottsville, except their youngest daughter, Marcella, who was born in Philadelphia in December 1888. In 1900 they were living on north 27th Street in Philadelphia. Between 1900 and 1910 they had bought a house at 2817 Poplar Street in Philadelphia and lived there thru the 1940s.
