Professional Football Player. After starring as an All-American running back for Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana, he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2nd round of the National Football League draft. He rushed for 1,501 yards and scored three touchdowns in his first two seasons, and was named the American Football Conference’s Rookie of the Year and as an All-Pro in 1981. He was only 24 years old when he died on June 29, 1983 while attempting to save three children who were drowning in a rain filled pond at Chennault Park, Monroe, Louisiana. He was awarded the Presidential Citizen's Medal posthumously, and his number #37 has not been issued to any Chiefs player since his death.
