Squire G. Merrill was Born in Canandaigua, New York, per his Army Registration Records. Throughout his life, he was involved in the U.S. military. One newspaper article states that he first joined the New York Volunteers in 1846 when he was just 12 years old. The California 1852 census shows Squire G. Merrill (18) living in San Francisco with his father, John H. Merrill (52) (Gentleman), and his step mother, Mrs. Merrill (36), along with two sisters, Laura (2) and Grace (6 months - born in CA). Per an 1890 military record he served for two years during the Civil War - May, 1862-May, 1864 - as a member of the Connecticut Volunteers - 5th Regiment, Co. E and his rank was listed as Musician. Another military record shows that he re-enlisted (2nd) in April, 1870, height 5'-5.5" with blue eyes and brown hair and was discharged July 1, 1874 in Washington D.C.. by the Secretary of War. His memorial headstone states - Died July 13, 1895, Aged 60 yrs, 9 mo., And 9 days - Connecticut Volunteers. This would place his birth date as Oct. 4, 1834. Squire first married Lucy Porter and they had two children - Lucy Frances Merrill (Drennan) (1858-1951) and John Bryan Merrill (1857-1930). Lucy however died in 1861 at the age of 29 in Plainfield, Connecticut, of consumption, now known as tuberculosis. He then married Anna Mary Fisher on Jan. 19, 1864 in Frederick, Md.
